Presentation Abstract:

The 2024 Maryland General Assembly promises to be impactful in many ways, and there is already quite a lot happening relevant to Stream Restoration. The $2 billion shortfall in the transportation budget, Gov. Moore's stated priorities in Environmental Justice, and, most concerning, legislation that could seriously affect the future of Stream Restoration as a practice in Maryland.

Liam O'Meara as President of EQR has been front and center in stream restoration construction over the past ten years, but most relevant to current events, in 2020 he founded Chesapeake Watershed Restoration Professionals (CWRP). CWRP, as a 501c4, is the first organization of its kind in that it is a trade organization representing the businesses that engage in the practice of ecological restoration in Maryland. Over the past three general assemblies, CWRP has advocated for the professionals who do this important work by educating lawmakers and regulators on the many benefits of ecological restoration, and by participating in the legislative process as closely possible.

Liam will give background and context to understand why stream restoration in on the agenda in 2024, describe the key players and what their goals might be, and give rundown of the bills we are likely to see presented that relate to stream restoration. From funding, to professional licenses, to the end of stream restoration as a BMP-- we will get you up to speed and show how to get involved yourself.
